£21bn Investment in Building Works for Schools

The Government’s Building Schools for the Future programme is committing £21bn of investment to refurbish and rebuild schools. That’s more money than was spent during the entire 18 years of the last Conservative Government.

This term alone more than 180 new schools are opening across the country, more than at any time in the last thirty years. The rebuilt schools already open, including in Newcastle, have seen average rises in pupil achievement of more than 10% over the past year.

Within Newcastle East, this has seen a new Walkergate Primary school, the first phase of the complete refurbishment of Benfield School, as well as the total rebuilding of West Jesmond Primary. This investment means that our youngsters are benefiting from state of the art facilities and reduced class sizes, to complement the 1000’s of extra teachers and teaching assistants.

Nick has seen at first hand the effect this has had within our local schools and as every teacher, child and parent knows, going to school in a brand new building which is designed for the 21st century can make all the difference.
