I met with my constituent, Andy Gray, and Benny Wenda, the Chairman of the United Liberation Movement for West Papua, to discuss the independence campaign for the West Papuan people from Indonesia. West Papua has been under Indonesian control since the 1960s as a result of a largely discredited referendum. Benny Wenda leads a group which is calling for a UN-supervised vote on independence in West Papua.

Jeremy Corbyn has previously referred to the situation in West Papua and stated that the recognition of human rights and justice will be the cornerstone of the Labour Party’s foreign policy. He stated that the West Papuan people have a “fundamental right” to determine their own Government and how they want to live.

I believe the Labour Party has an important role to play in the future in supporting the plight of the West Papuan people
