I visited the Magic Hat Café at the Byker Community Centre. The café aims to abolish avoidable food waste whilst providing nutritious meals for the public on a ‘pay-as-you-feel’ basis. The café is open every Friday from 5.30 – 8pm. I am disappointed that the Conservatives have failed to act on food waste. The Coalition Government abandoned Food 2030 – a strategy introduced under the last Labour Government to make safe, healthy, affordable and sustainable food accessible to everyone in the UK – and cut the Waste and Resources Action Programme funding by £10m. These schemes introduced by Labour led to reductions in food waste and tackled the wider issues of food sustainability and security. The schemes shared similar aims with the Magic Hate Café by coupling the reduction of waste food with the need to redistribute food to vulnerable people. With the rapid rise in the use of food banks since 2010 I believe that this issue needs to be urgently tackled. The wasteful disposal of edible food while there are so many people who go hungry in this country is deeply unjust.
