I am continuing to make representations to the Department for Work and Pensions about ongoing issues a number of constituents have experienced with Universal Credit. This month I have written to the Secretary of State responsible, Rt Hon Amber Rudd MP. Following inadequate responses from her predecessor on the issue I pressed her on the specific issue of Universal Credit payment dates falling around the same day within the calendar month that recipients receive their monthly wages from their employment. This creates a bi-monthly issue whereby a single assessment period may overlap two payment dates from their employment therefore nulling their award. It can lead to cashflow problems for those who receive it and adds further stress on top of already existing financial problems. I have asked the Secretary of State what action will be taken to rectify the situation. I will provide an update in a future Parliamentary Report when I receive a reply. Labour has called for an immediate pause to the rollout of Universal credit until its many issues are fixed.
