The Newcastle Chronicle joined up with other regional and local newspapers from across the North last week to call on the political parties to spell out what they intend to do to narrow the North-South divide. Sharing the same front page, more than 30 newspapers called for a bespoke Industrial Strategy for the North of England to enable every sector of the economy to flourish, an overhaul of the region’s road and rail network as a part of a wider environmental plan, and a fundamental shift in decision making out of London, giving devolved powers and self-determination to people in the North. I have long championed a specific industrial strategy for the North East that can help us tackle the unique challenges we face as a region but also allow us to build on our strengths and lead the country in areas such as offshore wind.
