I hosted the inaugural meeting of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Motorcycle Speedway for the new Parliament. I continue to remain concerned about the financial impact of the pandemic on the sport including on the Newcastle Diamonds based in Byker.

The Speedway season runs from March through to October. Planning for the 2020 season took place last winter. This included considerable amounts of money being spent on track and stadium preparation, race suits, rider deals, transport and promoting. The first lockdown came into force right at the start of the season. As Speedway grounds are not set up for live streaming at every stadium, staging events behind closed doors is not an option. As a result, there has been no opportunity for income.

Along with my colleagues in the Speedway APPG, I have written to the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport and the Home Office calling for financial support for the sport and help with riders’ visas.
