This year marks 75 years since the end of the Second World War. I normally mark the occasion by attending the annual event at the war memorial in Newcastle. Despite hoping to hold a smaller private event, due to the pandemic, this was cancelled. Instead, the Lord Mayor laid a wreath. I also observed the national two-minute silence at 11am on Armistice Day in the chamber of the House of Commons and attended a short service of remembrance led by the Speaker’s Chaplain.

The military continues to play an essential role in the country’s fight against the Coronavirus, reinforcing our frontline services, building hospitals, distributing PPE, running testing sites and planning behind the scenes. We must do all we can to support them.
