I met with the National Deaf Children’s Society. In Newcastle upon Tyne there are 291 deaf children. During our meeting we discussed outcomes for school-aged children and the support provided by Newcastle City Council. I was concerned to hear that since 2011, the number of teachers of the deaf in Newcastle has fallen by half. Unemployment amongst deaf people is also more than double that of those who can hear. The Society has my full support.
