The Russian invasion of Ukraine has highlighted the dependence of European and other major economies dependence on Russian gas. Energy security is an integral part of our national security. The Government must use this moment to accelerate our transition away from fossil fuels and increase our nuclear and renewable energy generation. I still believe that the climate and environment emergency are the most pressing issues we face. I am strongly opposed to the idea that this is the time to increase domestic production of hydrocarbons. The government is already way off track to meet its climate targets with the Committee on Climate Change given them less than 4 out of 10 for delivery. I will continue to urge the government to act on this immediately.
