Last year I backed the Macular Society in their campaign to establish a National Clinical Director for Eye Care. Similar roles are common with other conditions such as diabetes. Until now there has been no representation for eye care, despite ophthalmology being the biggest out-patient department in the NHS. I pressed the Department for Health and Social Care on this and was glad to hear that, in response to my Written Parliamentary Question, Maria Caulfield, Minister for Patient Safety and Primary Care, announced that a national recruitment process would be launched. I understand that the role is now being advertised. I hope that this leads to more joined up eye care services from diagnosis to rehabilitation.
